Railay Beach Guide 2025 — How to Get There, Best Beaches & Rock Climbing

Railay is only reachable by boat — which keeps it paradise. Here's how to get to this car-free Krabi peninsula, the best beaches to visit, and what to do.

Railay Beach sits on a peninsula in Krabi Province that's cut off from the mainland by towering limestone karsts — making it accessible only by longtail boat. Despite technically being on the mainland, it feels like an island, and its four beaches each have a distinct personality.

🚤 How to Get to Railay Beach

From Ao Nang (most common)

  • Longtail boats depart from Ao Nang Beach to Railay East, 07:00–22:00.
  • Journey time: 15–20 minutes.
  • Price: ฿100 per person (shared boat). ฿600+ private charter.
  • Boats run continuously during daylight; after dark, look for boats on the beach.

From Krabi Town (Chao Fah Pier)

  • Longtail to Railay East: ฿150/person, 45 min.
  • Only when there are enough passengers (minimum 6).

🏖️ The Four Beaches of Railay

Railay West

The postcard beach — white sand, turquoise water, and dramatic karst backdrop. Most resorts are here. Best for swimming and watching sunsets.

Railay East

Where the longtail boats dock. Rocky and mangrove-lined — not for swimming, but great for watching the boats and connecting to other beaches via the main walking path.

Phra Nang Beach

Consistently ranked among the world's most beautiful beaches. Dramatic karst walls on three sides. Reached via a 10-minute walk through the peninsula. Princess Cave at the southern end is a local spiritual site.

Tonsai Beach

The wild sibling — home to rock climbers, budget guesthouses, and a legendary beach bar vibe. Accessible by longtail or on foot (tricky at high tide) from Railay West.

🧗 Rock Climbing

Railay is one of the world's premier sport climbing destinations. Over 200 routes from beginner to expert on the karst walls. Half-day courses for beginners start at ฿1,000–1,200 including equipment. Book with one of the many guiding companies along Railay East.

✅ Essential Tips

  • There are no cars or motorbikes on Railay — everything is on foot.
  • Accommodation is pricier than the mainland; budget at least ฿1,500/night for basic bungalows.
  • Water taxis between Railay and Ao Nang stop running late at night — check last departure times.
  • Bring cash — the few ATMs on the peninsula charge high fees.
  • The viewpoint hike (20 min, steep) has sweeping views over both sides of the peninsula.
